It’s actually a group of cue sports played on a rectangular table covered in green felt, with six pockets—one at each corner and one in the middle of each long side. The objective? Use a cue stick to hit the balls into those pockets with style and precision.

Now, pool isn’t just one game—there are several popular versions, each with its own unique twist. Some of the most well-known types include eight-ball, nine-ball, ten-ball, blackball, straight pool, seven-ball, one-pocket, and bank pool. Among these, eight-ball is by far the most popular and widely played. In fact, when most people say “let’s play pool,” they’re almost always talking about eight-ball!

You might also hear the term “pocket billiards” thrown around. This is a broader category that technically includes all cue sports played on tables with pockets—so it covers pool games but also extends to games like snooker, Russian pyramid, and kaisa. While these games are related, they’re usually not grouped under the casual idea of “pool.”

And then, just to keep things interesting, there are also some hybrid games that mix elements of both pool and carom billiards (which are played on pocketless tables). These include creative twists like American four-ball billiards, bottle pool, cowboy pool, and English billiards.

So, whether you’re a seasoned player or just looking to enjoy a friendly match, pool offers a variety of ways to have fun, test your skills, and maybe even show off a little. 🎱

Michael Phelan (April 18, 1819 – October 7, 1871) was an Irish-born American billiards player, manufacturer and owner of billiard parlors. He was the first billiards star in the US. In 1850, he published Billiards Without A Master, the first book published in the US on the science, etiquette, and game rules of billiards.

🎱 A Little Trip Down Pool’s Memory Lane

The pool games we know and love today—like eight-ball and nine-ball—actually have their roots way back in 19th-century England. Back then, two cue sports made their way to the United States and helped shape what we now call “pool.”

The first was English billiards, which evolved into something called American four-ball billiards. It was kind of like the original remix—same idea, but with an extra red ball to keep the scoring spicy. This game was super popular in the mid-1800s, especially before straight rail (a carom game) took the spotlight. People even tried playing four-ball on carom tables in the 1870s, but it slowly faded into obscurity. One quirky version of it, called cowboy pool, is still around today as a nostalgic nod to that era.

Now the real game-changer? That was pyramid pool. This one had a major influence on the pool scene. By around 1850, a version called fifteen-ball pool became the hot new thing. But pool didn’t stop evolving there. In 1888, continuous pool took over, which eventually led to the creation of straight pool in 1910.

As the 20th century rolled in, new and exciting games entered the scene, like Kelly pool and the now iconic eight-ball—the game that would go on to rule pool halls, bars, and basements everywhere.

Now let’s talk style. Those colorful balls we see today? That wasn’t always the case. Before 1889, all object balls were the same deep red color, only identified by their numbers. Eventually, players from games like English pyramid pool and life pool started using different colored balls to make things easier and more fun. The solid vs. striped ball look we’re all familiar with was the final touch—and now it’s hard to imagine pool without it!

Type of pool table.

🎱 1.
